My third doggie date was with Mango, a pit bull who is less than a year old. I don't think I've ever pet a pit bull, much less walked one. She was sweet but she had a pretty mean little trick. When I wouldn't let her lead the walk, she just laid down on the sidewalk in total puppy dog definance. The woman at the shelter told me to just tug on her leash and she would get up. Well, she didn't get up right away. This caused me to be dragging her along the sidewalk, thus looking like a dog abuser as I tugged and tugged on her collar.
She played this game at least four times, then she would get up and walk on her leash like as if everything was normal. During one of her little defiant episodes, one guy saw me yanking on her leash, stopped his car and asked if she needed any water. "No," I told him, "She is a shelter dog and this is her little game."
I had to keep reminding myself that a pit bull's neck and jaw are the strongest muscles in their body so I could've dragged her down the street by her neck and she woudn't have been phased. I mostly worried what a bad 'dog owner' I looked like to all the neighbors on the street.
She finally got her act together and we had a nice long walk. She did pull one final "lay down" and I definately sat on the ground next to her and announced that I was going to sit there for as long as she laid there. That unempowered her little game.
Good news! She has been adpoted and her new owners pick her up today (Sunday).
PS Pixie got adopted this past week. She wasn't at the shelter for more than 10 days. I knew she was too cute to stay there long.
